Gold Rush to See Read Deal Star

Burton Mail 25th February

SCORES of people welcomed television antiques expert DAVID DICKINSON to Burton to open a business. Birmingham based business jeweller Rex Johnson and sons invited the real deal star to cut the ribbon at its station street shop yesterday.

The outlet will offer a pawnbroking service as well as giving customers the chance to cash their cheques and sell unwanted jewellery for cash. Mr Dickinson, who also starred in I’m a celebrity...get me out of here, said ‘Certainly gold isn’t as cheap as chips anymore because of the price of it is at an almighty high at the moment and, because of the recession, people have become more aware of the value of some things they didn’t realise they had at home.

‘I’m very pleased that this branch is opening. This is the fourth opening i have done for them in the last few weeks and if their other stores are anything to go by then this one should do very well.’
David Johnson, the managing director of Rex Johnson and sons’ new store, said he decided to open a branch in burton because the town holds fond memories of his childhood.

He said: ‘When my father was younger he used to have a market stall in burton. Also, when we used to buy the cutlery to sell on the market we had to go to Sheffield and the old road used to run through burton.

‘We’d buy the cutlery in Sheffield and load up the car and on the way back the car would break down in burton, so i thought it would be a nice thing to come back to burton.
‘I’ve got to say from the reception we’ve had i don’t think I’ve made a mistake.’

LEADING jeweller Rex Johnson offered a “real deal” to customers at the opening ceremony of  a new shop this week.

It is the seventh site of its kind to be re-launched by the long-established family business in the past nine months.

The shop will buy unwanted gold jewellery, gold wrist and pocket watches, coins and medals, as well as providing a cheque-cashing and pawn broking service.

David Johnson, managing director of Rex Johnson & Sons and co-director of Rex Johnson Online, said: “People are realising that there is ready cash tied up in their old, broken or unwanted jewellery and are coming in to sell it while gold prices remain high. We are delighted to be expanding into Northampton.

“Pawnbroking is another way to secure money against valuable items knowing that they have not gone forever.

“The former image of pawn broking is way in the past and it is now a well accepted activity.

“This is especially true in London where more and more of the leading names in jewellery are opening up prominent high street locations, resulting in pawn broking becoming the UK’s fastest growing business.”

The firm has stores in Birmingham and Dudley and opened its first East Midlands store in Friar Lane, Nottingham, earlier this month. A second will open in Northampton and another is due to open in Burton on Trent on February 24. Derby, Loughborough, Leicester and Stoke on Trent have also been earmarked.

Duke: Gold is not as cheap as chips

Northampton Chronicle 23 February 2010

ANTIQUES expert David Dickinson proved to be a real “Bobby Dazzler” for shoppers in Northampton as he officially opened a new store in the town centre.

The popular TV presenter known as “The Duke”, attracted a large crowd of people to Mercers Row, outside All Saints Church, yesterday when he appeared for the first day of trading at Rex Johnson Online, a gold buying, cheque cashing and pawnbroking shop.

The shop is the seventh to be opened in the Midlands region by the jewellers Rex Johnson & Sons and Mr Dickinson said the company’s success could be put down to the fact that people were starting to realise that gold was no longer as “cheap as chips”.

He said “I think with the present economic situation money is scarce and people are starting to realise the huge price that can be received for gold”.

“People don’t realise that if they have got an old watch or old sovereign in a drawer they can get huge amounts of cash for it. People do need to shop around and do their homework though to make sure they are not being ripped off”.

Owner David Johnson said he was very happy to be opening the first store in Northampton and was hoping to open up other stores in the country if it was a success.

He said “We have a reputation for being particularly fair about the price we give for gold. We make it quite clear the price we are charging by advertising it on A-boards outside the shop each morning”.

“I think the shop will still be able to sustain itself if the price of gold goes down as a pawn brokers is the easiest way of getting a small loan. I think there is not as much of a stigma attached to pawn brokers these days”.

Rex Johnson Online will be open from 9:15am to 4:30pm.

This is our seventh shop in the Midlands and we have plans to shortly open five more. The gold boom shows absolutely no sign of slowing down. We openly advertise, twice a day, the price we offer for gold and stick by that. We don’t barter but we give people a fair price and pay them out on the spot. We also sell gold ingots and act as a pawnbroker.

Manjitt Weekly, October 22nd 2009

A Bearwood gold buying centre and put owner have teamed up to beat the parking problems in the high street. David Johnson, or Rex Johnson Online, was so frustrated of the lack off parking in the area that he and Michel Bassot of the Kings Head, Hagely Road, have devised an innovative solution.

Anyone who visits the gold buying and cheque-cashing outlet at 526 Bearwood Road will benefit from free parking at the pub-and a free drink- if the take Rex Johnson Online flyer from the bar and return it with their receipt from the store. “Customers were complaining they couldn’t park anywhere, so we had to think of something to encourage shoppers into the area”, explained David Johnson, director of the company. “The arrangement with the Kings Head is one that will benefit not only both of us, but the rest of Bearwood as shoppers will be able to look around the other stores in the area.
“We wanted to say thank you to our customers because we have had tremendous support since we opened in July”.

Touch of Midas for City Jewellers Rex Johnson

Birmingham Post, 5th March 2008

A BIRMINGHAM jeweller is enjoying a once in a lifetime "gold rush" as bracelet and necklace owners cash in on the record value of the precious metal. Staff at Rex Johnson and Sons are struggling to cope with a flood of customers trading in their old gold to take advantage of all-time high prices. David Johnson, proprietor of the Corporation Street shop, said gold had reached its biggest high since January 1980, thanks to world governments boosting their reserves.

"Gold is at the highest price it has ever been. It's phenomenal and we think it is due to recession, particularly in the USA," he said.

"When there is a recession, people turn to gold to support their economy.
Countries throughout the world are buying gold reserves to strengthen their economy."

"In December, the price of nine carat gold was the equivalent of £77 an ounce and we are now paying £127 an ounce."

"A lady came in the other day with what she said were six farthings."

She said "are they worth anything?". "My assistant said they are sovereigns and she went away with £450."

Mr Johnson said customers at the company's sister shop in Dudley had been queuing for up to 40 minutes and he expected demand to grow at the Birmingham store.

"We do not know how long this is going to last."

"We are getting people coming in with old bracelets and necklaces they are no longer wearing - it's the busiest we have been since 1980," he added.

Gold Rush to Rex's as Families Cash

Birmingham Mail, 7th May 2008

THERE'S cash in that there gold... according to one Dudley jeweller who is reporting queues around the block every day at his family-run shop.

David Johnson said the credit crunch and worldwide economic slump had resulted in an amazing gold rush to his store in Birdcage Walk, in the town centre.

He said lines of people were stretching out of Rex Johnson & Sons from when it opened at 10am to when its closed at 3.15pm.

Mr Johnson, who is 55 and has been in the trade 40 years, said he had to take on extra security staff, and had switched off the phone after being "swamped" with inquiries.

Since February, record gold values had seen 10,000 people selling their unwanted gold at the shop, he added.

"There was a similar thing in the 1980s but nothing like this. The volume of people waiting to sell their gold is amazing. I've never seen anything like it."

"What people are doing is going through their old stuff and selling items from the 60s and 70s which are no longer fashionable, or even broken items."

"They are not taking the jewellery from their bodies. So my message to people is go through your drawers and dig out your old gold because it may even be worth more for its scrap value than it originally cost."

"Most of the gold we deal with is 9ct and 18ct gold, and we are also getting quite a lot of Asian gold, which is a bit purer."

"It's got to a position where we are serving people in the queue with tea and coffee while they wait, and at 3.15pm when we close we have to instruct the security to stop anyone else joining the queue," Mr Johnson said.
